On Tessaout River Valley, human settlements have poor living standards: minimum and basic facilities for outsriping the poverty threshold are non-existent.
The area is identified by low signals of human developments, which converts in a vulnerable area with a high level of Accute Diarrheal Diseases (ADD), main cause of child mortality rate affecting 25% under five age. The lack of drinking water services, proper sewage system, low or inadequate practice of health and hygiene habits and defficient handling of garbage are relevant factors affecting the proliferation of these diseases.
An additional problem of equal or greater importance is the excessive burden supported by girls and women in the community. They are responsible for climbing steep slopes to natural fountains and bringing water up to 40 liter containers.
aG main goal on this area is that an adequate drinking water supply with a proper water sewage system will be available for inhabitants on Tessaout Proyect. The first stage was accomplished on Azzerzem, due to fountains and river travesing the village get empty on summer season, so their population has to move several kilometers in order to search for water. This program benefits nearly 25 families which increases to 250 inhabitants. The works were completed on November 2012 and through 2013 a similar project started for two additional villages, Ifoulou and Irbrane, which was completely operative on Easter 2014.
The first stage of the Water Project was focused on the three aforementioned villages, where we manage to bring drinking water to all houses. This implies three-year great effort and, today, these villages still enjoy drinking water, so we consider that this project can be classified as a lasting and sustainable development.
Once the remaining villages checked the results and our implication on the project, a large number of water petitions started to arrive. We have bring water to a total of 12 villages and more than 3500 inhabitants. On 2017, 1200 additional people of 3 new villages will improve their living conditions. To sum up, almost 5000 persons in total will enjoy drinking water in their homes.
Our aim is to launch among two and three water projects per year and it is our hope that drinking water will reach 44 villages in our area, although that will depend on the economic resources available and their own inhabitants will have to decide and want to involve on this development.
A communal house is a building for public use of theis population where a classroom for children school, another one for women literacy, additional class for lodging teacher/s and in some cases, a medical room are included. When there is no academic activity, these spaces will be used for meetings of inhabitants of that village.
The main goal of communal houses is conferring schools and women literacy spaces on villages and also a place for meetings and decision adoption for local associations. And, when there is a medical room, to provide medical assistance of local inhabitants and near villages.
On villages where we usually work, there are no public schools, women literacy, medical rooms or places for people to hold meetings, particularly on hard winter. This encouranges us to think about the building of communal houses, not only as a meeting place, but also as a space where village inhabitants can learn, grow, take care and interact among themselves.
Communal houses have significant power on community development, this will provide them with a place where groupal feeling can be created. These houses are a crucial element for development.
Communal house located in Ifoulou was the first physical building which Acción Geoda made on Tessaout River Valley. This was a key milestone which allowed us to prove those villages that we were there for staying and helping them on their development. It was opened on 2010 and since then, we have continued building additional communal houses in several villages, such as Magdaz, Toufghine, Azerzem and Agnso Nwuareg.
There are more communal houses in this project, because its own valley inhabitants have realized their importance. Our purpose is to build and open an average of two new communcal houses per year in different villages, although this will always depend on available funding and their own village wishes of involving directly on each project.
